The Assam Cabinet Friday approved a series of key decisions, including financial aid to tea garden workers, land allotment for Medanta Hospital, upgradation of the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), simplification of hydrocarbon exploration norms, and allocation of land for a proposed National University for Disability Studies.

A major highlight of the meeting was the financial sanction under the ‘Mukhya Mantri Eti Koli, Duti Paat’ scheme, aimed at supporting lakhs of tea garden workers across the state.

The scheme, which has been allocated Rs 342 crore for the current fiscal year, offers direct financial assistance and comes at a time when Assam is commemorating 200 years of its tea industry.

The initiative is being viewed as both a welfare measure and a tribute to the community that has played a vital role in shaping Assam’s identity.

The Cabinet also approved the allotment of land to Medanta, one of the country’s premier private healthcare chains.

The move is expected to give a major boost to Assam’s tertiary healthcare infrastructure, especially in Guwahati, and is aligned with the state’s plan to position itself as a medical hub in the Northeast.

Alongside this, a proposal to significantly upgrade infrastructure at the Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh was cleared, which includes modernising medical facilities, expanding critical care units, and procuring advanced equipment.

In the energy sector, the state government took steps to ease the regulatory processes for hydrocarbon exploration.

With Assam being rich in oil and gas reserves, this policy shift is expected to draw private and public investments while accelerating exploration activities and boosting energy output.

Another landmark decision was the allocation of land for establishing a National University for Disability Studies.

This will be the first such university in the Northeast dedicated to promoting inclusive education, research on disability issues, and rehabilitation.
